SIM University (UniSIM) was officially renamed Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) on 17 March 2017. This is part of the University’s re-structuring to be Singapore’s sixth and newest autonomous university, with a focus on the social sciences, applied education and lifelong learning.
SUSS is now under the ambit of the Singapore Ministry of Education; it is no longer a member of the Singapore Institute of Management Group. A Bill to formalise the status of the autonomous university has been passed in the Singapore Parliament; SUSS will formally become an autonomous university later this year.
SUSS will have an applied focus. It will also have, as its name implies, a special focus on the social sciences. SUSS will broadly apply the social sciences to the many disciplines which have a strong impact on human and community development. These will include disciplines beyond traditional social sciences; it will also continue limited offerings in business and engineering, amongst others. SUSS will grow its strength in adult learning, providing lifelong learning and qualification upgrading opportunities in a variety of disciplines, and strongly support the national SkillsFuture movement to enable all Singaporeans to develop to their full potential, as well as realise their aspirations. It hopes to complement the roles and contributions of the other five autonomous universities in Singapore’s higher education landscape.
The University’s day-to-day operations remain unchanged, as will its physical location in Clementi Road. Its website URL has been changed to ‘www.suss.edu.sg’ while its email domain has been changed to ‘@suss.edu.sg’.
