In cooperation with AAOU and the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), Nihongo Starter (NS) is reconstructed at the new MOOC platform AAOU Asia MOOC Portal and Asian Learning Portal. The course opened last 1 March 2019 with over 1400 enrollees.

Open University of Japan as the initial founder of NS stopped the MOOC platform service and, now, Nihongo Starter content is opened at the public domain for anyone interested with learning the Japanese language.

Nihongo Starter is an introductory material for Japanese-language learning written in English. Based on the syllabus of the Japan Foundation‘s coursebook Marugoto: Japanese language and culture, Starter A1, the material presents various basic learning tasks, such as ‘Exchanging greetings’ and ‘Talking briefly about your family,’ and provides opportunities to learn the Japanese language from the very beginning.
