Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam is the Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University since 15 September 2024. Before this position he served as the faculty member at the Department Physics of the University of Dhaka for last 32 years. He completed his Masters and Bachelor of Science (Hons.) degrees from the Department of Physics in Dhaka University with first class. He also did his Doctor of Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering, Toyama University, Japan under Japanese Government (Monbusho) Scholarship program.

During his vivid academic career, he did his post-doctoral researches at the Department of Materials Science, Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany under Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship program, at Materials and Engineering Research Institute, Sheffield Hallam University, UK under Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship program and at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Twente, The Netherlands under Erasmus Mundas Fellowship program.
